How much does a solar battery actually cost in Australia?
Real installed prices for 2026 by size and brand, what drives the cost up or down, and how long you'll wait to break even. No sales spin — just the numbers.

Installed prices by battery size
Prices below are typical fully-installed ranges across Australia in 2026, before the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate. Expect the low end for straightforward metro installs and the high end for regional, tricky switchboards or premium brands.
| Size | Installed price | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 5 kWh | $5,500 – $7,500 | Small home, evening top-up |
| 10 kWh | $9,500 – $13,500 | Family of 3–4, most common size |
| 13.5 kWh | $12,500 – $16,500 | High usage, EV owners, all-electric homes |
| 20 kWh+ | $18,000 – $26,000 | Off-grid ambitions or medium businesses |
Rule of thumb: ≈ $1,000–$1,300 per kWh installed. Cheaper per-kWh at larger sizes; premium brands (e.g. Tesla) sit at the top of each range.

Why two quotes for "the same battery" differ by thousands
Switchboard & wiring
Older switchboards often need an upgrade to safely connect a battery. Budget $500–$1,500 extra if yours is pre-2000s.
Install location
Garage wall installs are cheap. Rooftop, outdoor-only or long cable runs from the meter box add labour and materials.
Backup capability
Full whole-home backup needs an extra gateway or transfer switch — usually $1,000–$2,500 on top of the battery.
Solar bundled or not
Adding solar at the same time is cheaper per-kW than retrofitting later, and lifts the effective rebate on the whole system.
Cheaper Home Batteries rebate + typical payback
Federal rebate
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program discounts around $335 per usable kWh in 2026 — roughly $3,300 off a 10kWh battery, applied upfront by the installer.
State schemes
NSW, VIC and the ACT stack extra loans or rebates on top. Your installer applies eligible ones automatically.
Payback window
6–10 years for most homes with existing solar and a bill above $400/quarter. Faster with high evening usage or a time-of-use tariff.
